Welcome back to the "Land of All Things Brass." With marching band season coming to an end most performers are finding themselves involved in drum corps, local, district, regional and or state honor band auditions. To help those involved in these auditions I thought it a perfect time to discuss how to achieve a high level of success in preparing for and performing at an audition.
The ABC's of a Successful Audition
The first question everybody wants an answer to is: How do I control my nervousness before, during and after my audition? |

Were you there? Did you see it? What a night of music and pageantry and a celebration of what is good about the music programs in the Inland Empire! The standing ovations were a testament to the hard work and sacrifice from the various band members who marched, played and shared their energy with the crowd. Opening the show was the well-rehearsed band from Ramona High School, performing their fall field show about "Pandora's Box." Very intriguing, it was enjoyed by the standing-room only audience, which exceeded 1,200 spectators! They will make a great California representative to the New Year's Day Parade in Paris! Congratulations to band director Paul Salyers, color guard instructor Beth Salyers and the entire marching band staff, band members and parents! |

He teaches music education and advance conducting courses.
“I was attracted by the talented students, outstanding faculty, and great administrators,” Velez said. “The potential in the music program is also quite promising.”

North Mecklenburg High School senior Jill Zartman and the Ashe County High School marching band were stars of the show Thursday in the 59th Carolinas' Carrousel Parade in uptown Charlotte.
Tens of thousands of spectators, enjoying beautiful weather after two days of rain and wind, lined streets near the square to watch hundreds of floats and marching units -- and the lighting of the city's Christmas tree at Trade and Tryon streets.
Zartman had a position of honor in the parade, after being crowned Carrousel queen on Wednesday night.
A National Honor Society member, Morehead Scholarship nominee and vice president of the student body, Zartman won a $3,000 scholarship and reigned over the Thanksgiving Day parade.

Band rises (early) to the occasion |

The first thing I have to say is, I can't believe it's really over. After all the rehearsal, with hours of marching around the track in the Tucson heat during our weekends, we finally made it to New York City for the experience of a lifetime. At first it wasn't so pleasant.
What people don't know is that the bands that participate in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade have to show up extra early to rehearse the televised part of the show. That meant that we had to wake up at midnight and go out into the street for our final run-through. Because we had flown over on the red-eye the night before, everyone was suffering from jet lag. Many of us only got two hours of sleep. Read the rest of the story at the Tucson Citizen
