In The News: Heartland Community Schools Band Members’ Love Of Music On Display Throughout Marches |

The Heartland Community Schools band members may have only one performance this year under their belt, but they're old pros already at putting on a show.
After all, they do it almost every school day.
They march three blocks straight down Henderson's downtown business district just a short jaunt from their school's front door. Then, as a couple dozen people pop out onto the sidewalks in front of their businesses, the band members turn around and march back.

In crisp cherry-and-white uniforms, Temple University's Diamond Marching Band marched in place, lips poised on brasses and reeds, and awaited the signal from their drum major perched on an eight-foot stand. Then, the water-logged sky let loose with fat raindrops that quickly grew into a downpour.
Without hesitation, the 180 bandsmen and bandswomen moved into their routine, gliding cat-smooth into the shape of a guitar while they played the music from the Guitar Hero and Rock Band video games. Pointed brass notes pierced the air, darting past like flaming arrows. When the band finished its 15-minute routine, a soggy crowd of about 3,500 people cheered.

Darkness fell over Johnson C. Smith University as uptown's skyline glistened in the distance and a cool breeze blew through the hilltop campus for a night of quiet study.
Yet any chance for calm was quickly broken. The International Institution of Sound, JCSU's 110-member, high-stepping marching band, was about to start another three hours of practice.

The 34th Lynchburg Classic marching band competition opened to overcast skies threatening rain Saturday afternoon, but the rain only sprinkled spectators and participants.
Twelve bands from across Virginia competed in the contest, hosted by the E.C. Glass and Heritage High School marching bands, and sponsored by the Lynchburg Music Center.

BYU trumpets 100th anniversary of Cougar Marching Band |

After 100 years of performing, day or night, rain or snow, the Cougar Marching Band will rise and shout this fall to celebrate its centennial anniversary with a new home.
The newly finished Cougar Marching Band Hall at LaVell Edwards Stadium gives the band a central location for rehearsals and much-needed storage space for uniforms, instruments and other equipment.
But, most importantly, it will give "The Power of the Wasatch" a place of its own for the first time in its 100-year history. |

Phoenix Rising Crowned Irish Marching Band Association Champions |

Following an exciting season in the Republic of Ireland, Phoenix Rising from Dublin were crowned All Ireland Champions at the IMBA Championships held in Arklow, Co. Wicklow yesterday. This was a fine end to a productive season for the Rising who also lifted the league One crown for the first time in 5 years. Phoenix’s original Irish show, "The Children of Lir” took 4 captions to take the contest on the day with a score of 804. The Clonmel Bluehawks, Co.Tipperary, pushed the Dublin team all the way with their show “The Incredibles” however it was Phoenix who won on the day.
In another closely contested division, the Inbhear Mór Marchers took the division 2 title, followed closely by the Tallaght Festival Band. |

USSBA Announces 2008 State Championship Schedules |

The US Scholastic Band Association [USSBA] is proud to announce the schedules for the upcoming 2008 State Championship Series of events scheduled for six states on the weekends of Oct. 18-19 and 25-26.
The Pennsylvania State Championships will return to Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 18th, while the Maryland and Delaware State Championship will be contested at the same time at Century High School in Sykesville, Md. The following day, the New York State Championship will be held at the Mitchell Athletic Complex in Hempstead, N.Y.
