Six high school marching bands were named the 2006 US Scholastic Band Association [USSBA] National Champions Saturday in the circuit's inaugural event held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md.

The North Penn High School Marching Knights of Landale, Pa., took the highest score of the evening with a 98.475, earning the title of Overall National Champion as well as Class VI National Champion. North Penn's program titled "Voice of Genius" surpassed nine bands competing in that class. Close behind in second place was Blackstone-Millville High School of Blackstone, Mass., with a score of 98.275 and Immaculata High School of Somerville, N.J., who placed third with a score of 98.125.

Five bands competed in the Class V grouping with Mona Shores High School of Norton Shores, Mich., being named National Champion with a score of 95.800. E.C.Glass High School of Lynchburg, Va., took second place with a score of 94.275 and Passaic High School of Passiac, N.J., earned the third spot, their score 93.400.

The Class IV grouping had 10 bands competing for top honors, with Absegami High School's program titled "Through the Eyes of Children" being recognized as the National Champion in that class. Located in Galloway, N.J., the band earned a score of 96.900. Absegami just edged out Hillsborough High School of Hillsborough, N.J., who place second with a score of 96.375. Third place was awarded to Fair Lawn High School of Fair Lawn, N.J., with a score of 94.225.

Waterford High School of Waterford, Conn., earned the National Champion title in Class III with a score of 95.85. They were matched up against eight other bands in the class. Princess Ann High School of Virginia Beach, Va., earned second place with a score of 94.875 for their program Con-zen-tic. In third was Montville Township High School of Montville, N.J., with a score of 94.125.

With a whopping 11 bands competing in Class II, Shawnee High School of Medford, N.J., was awarded the National Championship title with a score of 94.675 for their show titled "Going for Broke: a Gamer's Tale." River Hill High School of Clarksville, Md., earned second place in that class with a score of 94.325 and Monsignor Farrell High School of Staten Island, N.Y., took third with a score of 93.875.

In the smallest grouping of competition, Class I, the highest award was earned by Fluvanna County High School of Palmyra, Va., with a score of 94.675 for a program titled "Reflections." Second place was awarded to Haddon Heights High School of Haddon Heights, N.J., with a score of 93.800 and third went to Bellville High School of Bellville, N.J. with a score of 90.875.

Top sections also recognized

For the first time ever in USSBA history, bands percussion and color guard sections were judged for Overall Caption Awards. Over the 48 band competition, Immaculata HS (NJ) was awarded the Overall Best Percussion National Championship title as well as tying for the Overall Best Color Guard National Championship title, an award they shared with the Morris Knolls HS (NJ) who competed in Group III.

In the largest grouping, Class VI, Immaculata High School's colorguard and percussion section earned first place caption awards. Passaic High School also took both colorguard and percussion firsts in Class V while in Class IV Hillsborough High School earned the colorguard award and Fair Lawn High School took percussion first place.

Morris Knolls High School won first place in colorguard for the Class III bands and Princess Ann High School took top percussion honors. In Class II, Methacton High School won first place in the colorguard caption and Shawnee High School's percussion section placed first for the group.

Fluvanna County's colorguard took first in Class I while Haddon Heights High School was awarded first place in the percussion caption.
